5 BEST EPISODIC GAMES

5 BEST EPISODIC GAMES

A lot of good games these days are released in episodic formats. Here are some of the best episodic games that you should check out.

Game of Thrones – PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Android

The world of Westeros is already quite well fleshed out thanks to the expansive books and the TV show, but Telltale is going on and making it their own world with its on-going episodic series. Focusing on the trials and tribulations of the Forrester family, Telltale’s Game of Thrones series is exploring the world of Westeros beyond what we’ve already seen in the books and TV show. It features the same quality of writing that the studio is known for, along with The Walking Dead-esque choices which change the storyline in strange and often depressing ways.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, PS Vita

The sequel to the not-so-terrible Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS, this game for new and old gen is taking the episodic route this time around. Featuring returning characters from the series, along with surprisingly tolerable dialogue for a Capcom game, Revelations 2 picks up the ball that was so ineptly dropped by Resident Evil 5 and 6. The game's short episode length allows it to tell tense and legitimately scary stories that the original became known for.

Life is Strange – PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One

From the makers of well conceived but poorly executed Remember Me comes the episodic Life is Strange. The game focuses on choices - moral or otherwise, that the main character Max has to make to advance the story. The twist here is that you can rewind time in a limited fashion to change your choice if you don't like the outcome. With a "cheat" like that, the choices you have to make are very complex, with their outcomes criss-crossing and keeping you on your toes.

D4 – Xbox One

After Deadly Premonition, Swery65 returns with Dark Dreams Don't Die, an Xbox One exclusive that makes heavy use of the now-optional Kinect senson (the game features controller support as well). The first two episodes came out at launch and featured a plot that involves time-travel, a dead wife, the letter "D" and generally made no sense. But that's part of the charm of Swery65 games it seems, and despite its flaws, it's worth playing on the Xbox One simply because there's nothing else like it.

Tales from the Borderlands – PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Android

Adapting the "shoot-loot-repeat" trigger happy Borderlands series into an episodic choice driven RPG format was a challenge Telltale games met head on with great success. Focussing on the strong characters that the series provides, Tales from the Borderlands adds a new layer to the already dense plot of Pandora and its inhabitants. Also present is the humour that fans have come to expect from the rather humorous series.
